TransFair USA is a nonprofit organization and a certification body. Another competitor in the same space is is Equal Exchange. Starbucks is a place where I sometimes buy coffee - you may have heard of it. When asked why they do not have many fair trade certified coffees, the most typical response I have heard is essentially that the company deals directly with the farmers, which purportedly addresses many of the same issues addressed by the certification bodies mentioned above. Still, in addition to their African Kitamu, I am at a hotel where Starbucks offers Decaf Fair Trade Blend. To me, this is a signal that Starbucks recognizes that the Fair Trade label may stimulate some of their customers to buy the certified product more than their direct relationship argument cited, above.
